Israeli Soul: Chef Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook

Hear their Story. Taste their Award-Winning Cuisine. Support Your Community.

Thursday, October 18th at 7pm in Shalom Park

Jump into the Jewish new year with Women's Philanthropy! Mix, mingle, and network with women of our community who are raising their voices, giving back, and repairing the world together. You will have the opportunity to meet Chef Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook at the launch of their new book, “Israeli Soul: Easy, Essential, Delicious.”

In “Israeli Soul” the duo’s first major book since the trailblazing Zahav, Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook go straight to the food of the people—the great dishes that are the soul of Israeli cuisine. Usually served from tiny eateries, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, or market stalls, these specialties have passed from father to son or mother to daughter for generations. To find the best versions, the authors scoured bustling cities like Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa, and sleepy towns on mountaintops.

Michael Solomonov is not your average Chef. His deep connection to Israel and his story of triumph out of tragedy is the ultimate Jewish story. On food, Michael believes Israeli cuisine is full of delicious contradictions. The food can be both vibrant and elemental, rich and healthy, old and new. “Israeli food is not a static collection of traditional recipes. It is an idea…a shared experience.” Michael is the executive chef/co-owner at Zahav, a modern Israeli restaurant that brings the authentic flavors of Israel to Philadelphia. Accolades include 2017 James Beard Foundation Award winner for Outstanding Chef, and the 2016 James Beard Award winner for "Best International Cookbook” and "Book of the Year" for his and business partner Steven Cook’s first cookbook, Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking.

Steven Cook is one of the country's top restaurateurs and the co-owner of CookNSolo Restaurants, home to some of Philadelphia’s most distinctive culinary concepts. His culinary mark began with Zahav, the pioneering modern Israeli restaurant that puts the diverse cuisine of Israel on the map, and extends to Federal Donuts, Abe Fisher, Dizengoff, Goldie, and the philanthropic luncheonette, Rooster Soup Company, which donates 100% of its profits to their non-profit partner, Broad Street Ministry Hospitality Collaborative.

Light hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served. Book sale and signing following the program.
